You Herd Right
Who the hell would want a dog when they could have a miniature
cow instead? That was the first thing we asked when we first
herd of Dustin
Pillards ranch of tiny cattle. We all know that cows
are wonderful creatures in their natural form, but they arent
really built to be great pets. Not any more. Now all those heifer-loving
households can get their own little doggie thanks to the fine
folks of the Oxen Ridge Ranch, which is dedicated to the breeding
of miniature cattle. No bull.
What would you do with a miniature cow, you ask? Pillard, of
the Oxen Ridge Ranch says the options are limitless.
"You could do commercials, or have them as pets... cows
are very smart. I even had a bunch of Mexican midgets come and
ask if they could have some males for a midget bull fight."
Put the barbecue away though, because you're not going get a
lot of beef off these pint sized cows. (However, many claim
the meat is very lean if you like small cuts) They sure are
cute and fun to look at though, and very loyal too. People love
cows, and cows love people say enthusiast. Not only do they
like to be brushed, theyll also come when you call them.
Try getting a cat to do that!
So far, the smallest member of Pillards ranch is a 3-year-old
33-inch tall bull weighing in at 320 pounds. This young male
fits the mold of what Pillard hopes to accomplish... an entire
herd of mature cattle less than 3 feet tall.
FACTOID
These cows can also be taught tricks. According to Pillard,
one man trained a cow to lie down while another one leaps over
it.
SIDE NOTE
No cows are injured in the process of miniaturizing them.
This all has to do with breeding and genetics. No ropes, harnesses
or contraptions are used to keep them from growing, and keeping
them small, contrary to what we previously reported. (Our fact
checker was fired shortly afterward.)
FACTOID
There are many other words synonymous with Cow: dogie,
freemartin, heifer, maverick, veal, yearling, bull, and calf.
